Smartphone-mentor: online education as alternative to universities

Corporate employee training is an absolute trend among global business leaders. Days, when various trainings and masterclasses for staff were rather a whim and status symbol, are gone.

Dynamics and constant changes in different market areas make to learn every day if only to keep up with the times. However, it can often come at a price for enterprises. The mobile learning market has come to the rescue of professionals.

The mobile learning market has grown by 900% since the early 2000s, when the mobile phone was in addition to a raspberry-red blazer and chain. Currently, it is one of the fast-growing industries.

Ukraine hit top ten countries with the highest rates of individual mobile education last year. It is a paradox that there are only three European countries in the top 10 – Poland, Czech Republic and Romania. Moreover, some companies even try to press universities. The popular self-education website, Coursera, has started to give courses of self-driving cars programming recently. Major automobile corporations have allocated funds for the development of the programme, which will teach anyone who is able to acquire knowledge, and provide them with specialists. Thus, the business itself forms an order for specialists.

So why do the world business leaders use eLearning more often as a leading medium of corporate training?

Rise of income

42% of companies, who participated in The Ambient Insight 2012-2017 Worldwide Mobile Learning Market’s survey, noted that the online education helps to increase corporate income. 41% of top-500 companies use one or another kind of employee training technologies at the moment. According to the IBM, every dollar, invested in the training, leads to 30% increase of employee’s productivity. The ability to acquire new knowledge and to use acquired skills immediately converts into the corporate income.

Cost cutting

The format of the extracurricular training at employee’s convenience, via smartphone or other electronic gadgets, has another weighty advantage for companies – cost cutting. IBM saved about $200 million due to the transition to eLearning’s techniques. The use of online training has cut down travel and living expenses, equipment spending and instructors.

Group cohesion

An employee turnover is not the most pleasant tendency for many companies. However, about 25% of employees leave their place of work due to the lack of opportunity for personal development. Significantly lower cost of on education allows get a greater number of employees involved in the process and to conduct such trainings more often. According to The Business Impact of Next-Generation eLearning, companies, which practice the online education, have higher revenue per employee by 26% than the rest. Besides, it allows to rally the team and to increase their involvement in the work process by 18% (Molly Fletcher Company’s data). According to the poll, published by, 72% of employees said that the training allows them to improve their competitiveness and to stay up to date with the latest developments in their field.

ELearning has a lot of advantages for employees themselves. Firstly, specially designed programmes can help to absorb 5 times more knowledge without increasing time expenditure. Thus, employees can quickly come back to their working places and to reduce company’s expenses. Secondly, the efficiency of such training is 20-60% higher. A person can go back to the studied material at a well-chosen moment and solidify an acquired knowledge. Furthermore, one can do some extra training at the time which is convenient to a person.

Environmental friendliness

Environmental friendliness of eLearning is a pleasant bonus. The British Open University has concluded that the mobile education can reduce electricity consumption by 90% in comparison with classroom courses, and reduces carbon dioxide emission per student by up to 85%.


The self-education and corporate education are the main trends of our time. Many company’s founders do not have diplomas. Mobile phones and other gadgets are becoming indispensable assistants in it. Can a mobile phone take place of a human? It is still a question. As a child, I enjoyed putting paper clips on teachers’ chairs. This trick will not work with smartphones.
